Challenges in running a paid membership site

Running a paid membership site can be quite challenging as you have to regularly produce good content, worthwhile programs, and keep your members happy. There is also the concern of expanding into new markets where your brand identity can limit your potential.

Last December 2004, I wrote a column piece sharing my thoughts on building and breaking brands based on personal experience.

Now, almost four years later, I am in this situation again with the DigitalFilipino.com Club. The above image is what the club is all about today. Some areas are not fully formed yet.

  • Research - when the club was first marketed in December 2003, I was gradually giving one research report per month as an incentive to join.

(Interviewed Reggie Bundang of RegaloService about online Christmas sales in 2007)
  • Training
    • Online Training
      • Podcast / Video - whenever I get the chance to meet with members, I explore having a video interviewing them (example above and blogger series). This in addition to my experiments in coming up with video/audio lectures.

      • Training pages - most of the literature I created are in e-book format for download and will explore putting its entire content online. Perhaps this will also spark more active participation in the forum section.

    • Face-to-face training
  • Networking - this ranges from forum discussion, to eyeball or meet-ups, and creating groups within social networks. The purpose is to keep a strong presence of the group within these sites. (e.g. LinkedIn)

  • Promotion - this includes disseminating updates on what they are up to, directory listing, banner ads, low-cost sponsorship and advertising opportunities.

  • Publishing / Mentors program - Offer an incentive for members who joined way back when we started by developing a book/training program with them.
The community has become bigger compared to what it was initially intended. The new additions were also a response to growing needs by current and request by new members. Keep it together or break it apart? Or maybe I'll just form a new site while keeping this community grow as is, we'll see.

Creating Valuable Free Prizes to Boost Success Chances

For those who have been part of my mailing list community and trackers of this blog for quite sometime now, I've always been a believer of giving away free stuff.

This reached the point that close friends were questioning my business model and how do I intend to survive with such method.

Of course, through the years, that free prize business model has refined and by experience, it really works especially when it is something valuable. Some of these includes:

  • Free attendance, drinks, food, and raffle items to DigitalFilipino.com get togethers and networking events. If I recall correctly, I've organized 4 to 5 big ones held in venues like AIM Acceed and National Sports Grill in Manila. Have organized similar activities in Cebu City, Davao City, Zamboanga City, Tacloban City, Legaspi City, Virac Catanduanes, Cagayan De Oro City, among others. These activities were key in boosting the growth of the mailing list community and got sponsors some exposure as well.
  • Free reports and presentation files
  • Free e-learning lessons (e-books)
Giving the above for free, of course, consume resources but its long term effect are worth it. These activities also sets my offerings apart from those who are trying to do the same today.

However, not all free prizes are repeatable. Their relevance is dependent on the time it was given and what were the wants (rather than needs) of the target audience then.

I just finished reading the book Free Prize Inside by Seth Godin. I agree that ideas need to be cheaper to build and faster to market. This is why giving free e-learning lessons, such as the e-commerce workshop online at that time, came in handy as the offering can already be given while the materials are still being developed.

It also satisfied a lot of those who joined then that got them to refer the program to other folks. Some even forwarded the lessons that were sent through e-mail. This success led to the DigitalFilipino.com Club and publication of my 2nd book.

I created three more similar programs although the quality of work and time spent in building is not the same as the first one. As a result, the benefits that was hope to be gained was not realized.

But those that didn't work out should not stop people like us from creating new free prize innovations that can generate valuable long term results.

Autoresponders - important tool for community development

A lot of people ask about the tools that we use in our website and how can one build a membership-based site.

For DigitalFilipino, I think being able to build a community through traditional mailing list, provide relevant content, and activities regularly organized since 1999 were important to its initial value recognition. I consider them as the first layer of community building.

In June 2003, we started offering free online workshops that engaged our community members better and provide initial introduction to paid services. It was offered to anyone interested at large.

Instead of keeping a database of email address of online students, and communicating with them one by one whenever you have a new lesson or announcement, I put all the lessons in an auto-pilot mode using an auto-responder.

For DigitalFilipino.com, we subscribed to GetResponse after getting recommendations from several friends.

Its features include personalization of emails, unlimited follow-ups, import and export features, send a broadcast email to your entire list all in one shot, attach files to any or all of your autoresponses, track your leads and responses, 19 different domains names to send from, send HTML-enhanced messages, own "confirmation" screen, selective broadcasting, block unwanted email addresses, bounce-back management, activity reports via email, among others.

I have no regrets so far as it has enable me to automate all communications I make to my target audience. I was able to create separate automated communication to current clients, prospects, free online workshop participants, among others. It's market segmentation in an automated manner.

Growing the mailing list though would require that you keep some standards on how you maintain it and I have three basic rules on this.

By December of 2003, that is the time I decided to launch my members-only website after discovering WebsiteWizard. I have four other websites hosted there and very much happy with its features so far. However, to make a membership-based site like mine sustainable requires being aggressive and work on offerings that will be hard to get from elsewhere. That is, trying to create a blue ocean whenever possible.

Make Money Online Through Blog Advertising

I got this question from Johnny who replied to our post on connecting with bloggers, encouraging questions to be asked.

"Do you have plans for us, Filipino bloggers, specially those who want to make money online, to convince our local business firms to advertise or put their ads in our respective blogs? Just like you got here in your blog where you post local ads as your sponsor?"
Whenever businesses evaluate advertising proposals, whether Internet-based or traditional print media, it gets evaluated the usual way such as:
  • Readership or audience profile
  • Content relevance
  • Investment versus value proposition
Behind it, other intangible values come into play such as relationship, track record, and capability to sustain.

What I learned from Chris Anderson's "The Long Tail," the more content or product selections you have, the more segments you can accommodate. This means that if you want to succeed, like in the case of blogging, having collective strength will allow you to compete fiercely with mainstream big players. Instead of journalists, traditional consumers and technology connectors are the ones supplying the content and analyzing industry developments.

After participating in affiliate and blog revenue generating programs, I decided to launch an ad revenue program for club members last end of January. Since this is still in experimental stage, the opportunity is currently limited to DigitalFilipino.com Club members.

In addition to the parameters mentioned earlier, advertisers I was able to tap got convinced on the following reasons:
  • Ads to appear in a good number of blogs and sites plus those of club members part of the ad network. More eyeballs, diverse blogs, fraction of mainstream media cost, all the better.
  • Apart from exposure, add-on benefits includes better search engine positioning. As most of my advertisers were able to get clients through being found in search engine results, it made more sense to support endeavors like this. It is also suitable to entities who are just testing the waters on Internet advertising.
There are some lessons learned in this area that I shared lately and look forward in growing together with those who joined.

Growing together

Earlier today, I discovered that three of my niche blogs have achieved a Google PageRank 4. They are:

These are great addition to my two sites that got PageRank 4 as well last January.

The last two were experiments on creating niche and wider audience blog. Seeing this achieve such a PageRank is a great break. It meant the site is ready to graduate from using Google AdSense and participate in our advertising sponsorship program.

I also found that some club members who joined our ad network have experienced progress with their respective PageRank. One achieved a PR 4 and 5 (when they started as PR 0). A few more were able to align their Technorati ranking to their Google PageRank. At least some of the stuff we do in mentoring worked! Of course, this good news means an increase in ad rates of their respective blog or website which makes all club members in the ad network quite happy.

Those who had a decrease in Google PageRank will be given up to the next update to recover, without any fee decrease.

Congratulations and let's continue growing together!

I have a strong vision on what I want do and achieve. As DigitalFilipino.com turns 8 years old this year and with a growing number of advocacies, that gives me no time to spare for free lunch, it makes me wonder if we can reach 25 years, still strong and competitive as ever.

I just like to share this inspiring video interview of U2, obviously my favorite.

Recognizing Filipino Websites

I spent the whole day today managing the final judging process for the DigitalFilipino.com Web Awards. The awards was designed to be an Internet user's choice award type as club members who judge the 31 category entries are both young and old online citizens.

Several things that came to mind when planning for it are:

  • We won't charge an entry fee.
  • We will actively nominate entries as necessary.
  • Very basic technical rule to be used, for entries to be shortlisted to the finals, is the site must have a unique title tag per page, no broken images, and contact info (minimum of e-mail or form) posted online.
  • During the awards ceremony, we will release a best practices guide that all site owners can take note of to improve their website further.
I feel blessed with the APEC Digital Opportunity Center's entry into this project as a co-collaborator when I least expected it. I guess this is a sign that we should do this learning experience project annually as well.

Bloggers/Journalists who wishes to cover the April 27 awards ceremony shall be more than welcome. Just send me an email at digitalfilipino (at) gmail.com.

Enjoying chaos

I admit that I'm the kind of person who thrives on personal chaos. I dislike the idea when everything around me gets too comfortable and end up creating personal challenges to grow. Although I must admit that the repurcussion can be quite tough and there are several lessons learned in that regard. Learnings gain makes it all worthwhile.

During the travel break, I will reflect on what to do after closing all the pending items I indicated above.

Reading the Catholic Digest

I just received a copy of the Catholic Digest yesterday. It is an interesting read as a lot of the topics intend to remind people on the importance of values and understand one's spiritual connection with God.

The January 2007 issue tackled concerns such as:

  • Four things to know about troubled marriages
  • How do you help a friend who has a troubled marriage
  • 12 questions Catholics ask about annulment
  • Apologize your way to better health (saying sorry and making apologies)

As we get ourselves exposed to traditional magazines and blogs that talks about money, power, sex, technology, new age, among others, reading publications like the Catholic Digest allows people like you and me to sit back and reflect on concerns and values that perhaps matter the most.

Catholic Digest, published in the United States since 1936, is the only Catholic publication devoted exclusively to connecting faith and everyday life. It is for Catholics who want to understand, celebrate and live their faith more fully in their families, parishes, neighborhoods and communities. With its readership base of over 2.5 million, it was recently acquired by Bayard Publishing Group, an international publisher with more than 100 periodicals in Europe, Africa, Asia and America. Its single shareholder is the French congregation of the Augustines of the Assumption.

Recently, Bayard signed in with AZ Direct Marketing Inc., one of the Philippines’ largest distributor of magazines, that gives exclusive rights to market the magazine nationwide. AZ Direct Marketing holds similar exclusive rights for Reader’s Digest and other foreign publications.

Special thanks to my club member, Gilbert Enriquez, for the copy!

Roll-out: Advertising Revenue Program for Club Members

Our advertising revenue program for club members just began its roll-out yesterday. There are now three club members in the roster, who are also bloggers, joined and began receiving assignments. Advertisers are now coming in as well that pressured me to start it earlier than February 1.

At this early state and in discussion with advertisers and bloggers (who are all club members), I already learned the following:

  • Getting advertisers to start with US$100 as a budget is not so bad after all. Risk is small, it won't hurt much if it fails.
  • Trust and belief in the community is important. Our club members/bloggers who joined the program have much to work on but giving them that chance matters a lot.
  • Mentoring is a must. One can't just give the assignment and let them be. Advise must be given regularly on how they can further improve their blog, increase readership base, and get more advertisement revenues in.
  • I think each blogger is accountable for their own blog and have every right to decide on what to do with it and how to go about things. Not be bothered by a-b-c-d lists of sort.
  • Be competitive. Actually, not to compete with others but with oneself. Always outperform your past accomplishment, whenever possible. Be happy with every improvement, no matter how small, and still pursue in getting better.

I'll be organizing club members meeting in Manila, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan De Oro, Legaspi, and Bohol to spread the word on this one this February. Will post the details soon in our club members blog.

The Blog Parteeh After Glow

My sincerest congratulations to the organizers of the Blog Parteeh (), especially to Abraham, for a successful event. Cheers to AJ for bagging the major prize. You are so lucky dude!

Special thanks to all the sponsors who provided the resources to make the event happen. Sorry guys if we were not able to listen to you well during your presentations as most of us hardly catched up with each other lately and there are a lot of matters to discuss.

I'm so glad to meet the very thoughtful Pierre. As far as my original agenda is concern, I find myself able to achieve the following and more:

  1. Several bloggers committed to help me promote my Cyberfair campaign and DigitalFilipino.com Web Awards and gave them copies of the Philippine Internet Review: 10 Years of Internet History (1994-2004). (abangan ko yung plug ha!)

  2. I was able to catch up with DigitalFilipino.com Club Member Mike Abundo about his membership and our advertising revenue program for club members. I also hope that Elymar will sign up as a club member na.
  3. I was able to talk to several bloggers (too many to mention) about speaking or panel moderating at iBlog3: The 3rd Philippine Blogging Summit. Anyone interested can check this out for possible topics and e-mail me at jtoral at iblogph.org on or before January 31 as I badly need to finalize this already.
  4. I was able to catch up with Migs and agreed to pursue our collaborative work with the Philippine Internet Review online. He'll be co-blogging there soon. (yehey!!!)
  5. Catched up with Aileen and posted my announcement of finding a suitable Valentine's Day date for her. Boys, apply na!
  6. Marc, who is also a club member, couldn't make it to Manila so will keep on reading his daddy adventures online.
  7. I was able to meet several Ituloy AngSulong participants but never got the chance to sit down and share experiences.

Many thanks GMA New Media for the ride home and look forward in collaborating with you.

Can't get enough? Here's more coverage from all those who attended the Blog Parteeh!

On a mega-request note, hope you can help me disseminate the word on this upcoming Blogging 101 Workshop book. Cheers!

98 Percent Rule

Last Wednesday, I availed of the Birthday Month discount that Fully Booked (bookstore) gives to its cardholders. This entitled me to a 40% discount for cash and 35% for credit card on any imported item sold in the bookstore. It was a toss-up between Moleskin notebooks (available in Fully Booked Rockwell) or traditional books. As my Author's Avenue Leatherbound Journal still sufficient, I availed of traditional books instead.

The book that caught my attention is Chris Anderson's "The Long Tail". (It seems that the Amazon link to the book version I have is not available in their site right now. Oh well..)

As I started reading it yesterday, I realized that the right materials are coming up for further enhancing my Blogging 101 Workshop (blogging101workshop) book project that is coming out this April 10.

The Introduction portion of the book discussed the 98 percent rule. Upon reading it, I now enjoy giving a pop quiz to friends like this. "Amazon.com is known for having a huge listing of book titles. In your estimate, at least how many of the titles there has one unit sale per quarter?"

As I spend nearly one hundred thousand pesos in bookstores last year (according to my customer loyalty cards in 3 bookstores), that question really intrigued me and made me guest of no more than 80%.

It shocked me that the answer turned out as 98%. That means, if my book sells one piece per quarter, that is normal. That is because of unlimited choices available today and where markets are further segmented. This means that perhaps my books are not within the taste range of attendees but it caters to a niche segment who may find specific value in the work I do. The more content or product selections you have, the more segments you can accommodate.

So we are now living in an age where bestsellers are not the one that really rules. The Long Tail talks about a situation where all of us are offered with unlimited choices, as everything becomes available to everyone. Service providers who offer products or services that intends to empower the small players (like Google AdSense - although Google has grown big already) may find themselves equally profitable and even more powerful than a handful of big ad networks.

This means that if you want to succeed, like in the case of blogging, having collective strength will allow you to compete fiercely with mainstream big players. A classic example here are blogging networks like PinoyTech Blog versus Inquirer as a source of technology development information. Instead of journalists, traditional consumers and technology connectors are the ones supplying the content and analyzing industry developments.

With that example, if used as an inspiration, I can revive a blog like W3O and have more chances of success, by getting more female players (mostly from the club member roster), developing them into professional bloggers, involved in the process. This time, not just contributors pro-bono, but actually compensating them for it. I'm trying to push this further as I inquire the possibility of getting the Philippine channel in CitizenBay. With an advertising program being established, perhaps this can work.

Ten reasons why I wanna Blog Parteeh!

Abe Olandres is organizing a Blog Parteeh! 2007. It is the largest blogger meet-up ever organized by bloggers for bloggers.

This will be on January 27, 2007 from 2 pm to 8 pm at the 6th Floor (Poolside Area) Classica Tower 2 Condominium HV dela Costa St., Salcedo Village,Makati City 1200

I have a clear agenda on why I want to be there. This includes:
