Leader's Prayer

In the book "The 21 Most Powerful Minutes in a Leader's Day", John Maxwell shared Bible stories to further explain "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership'.

Every law discussed has a corresponding prayer that leaders are encouraged to include in their own.

I decided to share my edited version of it for those who may be interested to use it too.

#1 Dear God, I want to be a better leader. Give me a teachable attitude. Show me the lids in my life. Reveal my character flaws to me, and help me repair them. Show me where I need to grow. And as I come up against lids that are outside of me and beyond my control, please send me a lid lifter.

#2 Dear God, reveal to me my true level of influence on others. Show me my weaknesses so I may submit them to You for Your grace. Strengthen me so I can better serve You through leadership, and increase my influence with others. Teach me to be salt and light to others - not to benefit myself - but to add value to others. And above all, empower me to place my family first when it comes to leadership. Let my influence begin with the modeling of a faithful life.

#3 Dear God, please put me on the road to greater leadership development. Reveal the dream You have for my life. Please it in my heart and kindle my passion for it. While you help me to grow, teach me to embrace the whole development process. Give me patience when I need it and passion when it's appropriate. Teach me to look beyond my life and desires. And when I'm ready, show me the big picture.

#4 Dear God, I know that you have a purpose for my life. I ask that You reveal or confirm that purpose in me day-by-day. Help me to be fully engaged in the situation. You placed me in, at this season of my life, and to connect with the burden You would place on my heart. Draw me forward in obedience to Your calling. And I ask that You would place in me the navigational ability so that I am able to lead and guide others to fulfill Your vision.

#5 Dear God, give me a listening ear. Help me to quiet myself before You so that I may hear Your still, small voice. Give me a pure, obedient heart. One that compels me to live a life of character before my people. Once I've listened to You, when I have something worth saying, please give me favor with my people so that I am able to add value to their lives.

#6 Dear God, Jesus taught us to pray, "Lead us not into temptation," and that is my request to You now.  Protect me from the desire to sin, which would dishonor You, and discredit me. And forgive me of the sins I already committed. Help me build trust with my people and to lead them with integrity and a servant's heart.

#7 Dear God, help me to have the right attitude towards the people within my influence. Make me a giver, not a taker. Help me to see the potential You have given each person, according to his gifts and talents, and give the ability and the desire to help him reach his potential. Touch me to respect people on the deepest level so that I can lead them to the highest level, not for myself, but for them and for You.

#8 Dear God, the psalmist prayed, "Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe Your commandments." I make that same request. Help me to increase my leadership ability, and hone my intuition. And may I exercise good judgment for the benefit of the people You've placed in my care.

#9 Dear God, the apostle Peter understood what it meant to grow to become someone You could use in leadership. I want to echo the words he wrote in 2 Peter 1: 5-9: "For this very reason, giving all diligence, add to (my) faith, virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are (mine) and abound, (I) will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins." Lord, show me who I truly am, and make me into the person You desire me to be so that I may effectively lead others to make a difference.

#10 Dear God, I want to make a significant impact on people's lives. Give me a heart that is genuinely concerned for other people. Help me to build honest, strong relationships, and show me opportunities where I can give of myself to better others.

#11 Dear God, teach me to think in terms of leading a winning team. Bring me the people You desire me to have as my teammates. Bring me a great inner circle of people. And empower me to be an inner-circle contributor for another leader.

#12 Dear God, I want to be used as an instrument of empowerment in the lives of people. Please help me to continually sense Your love for me so that I can be secure in my relationships with others. And give me a discerning eye for others' needs, so that I may serve the people in my life.

#13 Dear God, please give me Your perspective. Help me to see the work I do and the contribution I can make in terms that extend beyond my life span. And help me to see the potential leaders around me so that I can begin investing in them for Your sake.

#14 Dear God, grant me the courage to act on every leading You give me and reveal to me the next steps of obedience You would have me take. My desire is to fulfill the vision You have for my life. Mold me into the kind of leader who can attract people I can help and take where You want them to go.

#15 Dear God, only You can bring victory to me and my people. I submit myself to You and ask that You partner with me according to Your will.

#16 Dear God, help me to understand my current leadership situation. Show me whether my organization is moving forward or backward. Reveal the motivating and demotivating factors that are the keys to momentum building. And please make me a change agent for positive growth for my team.

#17 Dear God, You know what's best for me. Please help me order my life according to Your will, not my own. Show me the people in whom I should invest, and help me to be an effective leader in their lives and my own.

#18 Dear God, give me the heart of the giver. Help me to understand Your timing, to see what I should sacrifice for the sake of my people, and to relinquish anything I possess for the betterment of others. And if the best sacrifice I can make for my organization is to step aside and allow someone else to lead, give me the courage and the heart to do that.

#19 Dear God, I recognize that You have provided a season for everything and that I fit into Your divine purpose. I ask for discernment to understand Your timing. Give me wisdom and courage to make the right decisions regardless of the cost, for I don't want to miss out on the plan You have for my life.

#20 Dear God, I want to make an impact. I want to lead beyond my capabilities and my circle of influence. Teach me to be a leader of leaders. Give me favor with people, and bring me people with great leadership potential. And help me learn how to invest my life in them so that the result is explosive growth.

#21 Dear God, make me a leader of a legacy. Give me a vision worthy of my life and legacy. Send the right leaders to fulfill it, and help me to pour myself into their lives. Give me Your favor and that of the people. And when it's time for me to pass the baton, help me to get out of my successor's way.

I place myself in your hands. Amen.
