August 1 Eyeball: Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs 2007 Winners Announcement

First, many thanks to those who submitted entries to the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs writing project. Let us meet up on August 1 and get to know each other!

Top 100 Blogs by Blog Juice

After the post "Blogger Revenue and Blog Juice", I got asked if they can be considered as the top blogs in the world. I don't think so as there are a lot of players, especially those in the Technorati Top 100, who don't necessarily disclose their income.

To further expand the discussion on this, I started looking at the blog juice of these sites and checked out others as well. The blog juice rating is based on Bloglines subscription, Alexa ranking, Technorati ranking, and inbound links as per Technorati. (You can also Digg this story)

Join Paradise Philippines - The P600,000 Bayanihan SEO Contest

Last year, I got the chance to participate in the Ituloy AngSulong SEO competition and won a prize in the Yahoo and Google category. It was a great experience and has made me a better blogger.

This year, I've decided to be a sponsor of Paradise Philippines - The P600,000 Bayanihan SEO Contest and very excited about it.

Blogger Revenue and Blog Juice

I got the chance to read Old Vic's analysis on blogger revenues and their Alexa ranking inspired by Paula Mooney's blog post about "New List of Blogger, Webmaster, Domainer, Affiliate Marketer (and any other kind of dot com mogul) Salaries as of June 2007".

I got included in the said list after I shared how I make money from blogs and websites.

I have a problem relying on Alexa as its ranking is based on usage of the Alexa toolbar. I have seen bloggers changing their url, using a redirect to Alexa, just to increase their ranking. I was forced to do that in my Ituloy AngSulong blog just to had it registered in MyBlogLog (as it can't process my blog address for it).

I still put a lot of weight in Technorati rankings. Although the recent viral tag campaigns and those who create blog templates or tools may have shoot up their respective Technorati rank, but does not mean that it translates to readers.

Based on Alexa and Technorati, it is amusing that this blog has a good ranking compared to my e-commerce and Internet history sites whose traffic is 2 to 3 times more than this blog.

With that experience, most of the weight put on ad placement fees computation and decisions I made is still 80% heavily influenced by Google PageRank. Ideally, a site with a Google PageRank 4 should pursue having a Blog Juice rating of no less than 4.x too.

Let's take Old Vic's analysis further by looking at Paula Mooney's "New List of Blogger, Webmaster, Domainer, Affiliate Marketer (and any other kind of dot com mogul) Salaries as of June 2007" blog juice where the rating is based on Bloglines subscription, Alexa ranking, Technorati ranking, and inbound links as per Technorati.

Monitoring live blog traffic

When I launched The Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs in 2007 writing project, one need I realized was to actively monitor the blog traffic as real time as possible. This reached the point where one of my PC was allotted for this purpose.

Fortunately, there's Performancing Metrics where its Spy feature allows a blog owner to see visitors including their IP address and other pertinent information.

Being able to live track last May gave me the opportunity to:

See in real time when someone is posting a comment and how the entries are getting traffic as well.
Be able to spot by IP address unusual activities such as a visitor doing multiple clicks from one site with the intention of creating a trackback (to their home page and a deleted blog entry) to our contest page. It is amazing how far would some go with this.

Even when not using the Spy feature, the Performancing Metrics service gives you a visitor and action report that records the time you received a visitor, IP address, and activities they performed in the site. Some experience I had with it includes:

Be able to spot an anonymous comment where the person claims to be in another country yet their IP address shows that they are surfing the Internet connected through one of the big telcos here.
Received comments coming from different persons having the same IP address.
